Disabling Factor

An external condition that blocks or hinders an otherwise available ability from being used to complete a task. Disabling factors can arise from technology design (such as ability assumptions embedded in interfaces), environmental conditions (like noise or poor lighting), or social situations (such as attitudes of others). In Ability-Based Design, identifying disabling factors is essential because disabilities emerge from the interaction between users and environments—not from users alone. Designers must surface and mitigate these factors to enable successful task completion.
